is this a brown widow spider?
I'm obsessed with finding out what kind of spider this is. I found the little fella in a crate of apples. It looks like a brown widow spider (minus a few missing legs) but it has a black hourglass on it's abdomen instead of an orange hourglass. It acts like a widow spider, it curled up into a ball and played dead when I put it in a drinking glass for more observation. But I suppose that's a natural reaction for a lot of spiders who feel threatened. I've read that Brown widow spiders are not found in Virgina, so what is this Brown Widow impostor?

Did you ever figure out what kind of spider this is? I just found one in my back yard (Northwest Suburbs of Atlanta) and I need to know what it is. Like you, I'm obsessed with figuring it out...
hmm if this is the spider then it has found it's way as far as ontario, canada. october 9th 2011 ... seems like may have just landed from a silk ride as there was no way that this was local. well guess there are many things left to wonder about - take care for it may be quite strange out there.
I just found this same spider on the outside of my garage door in broad daylight and it wasn't near a web. I live in the Bay Area CA. So did you guys find out what kind of spider it is?
I confirmed its a species of the Wolf Spider.
Honestly, I don't think it's a brown widow spider. Here's what a brown widow looks like: http://brownwidowspider.net/
It's a cat face spider. They are non poisonous and non aggressive. These are good spiders to keep around. Don't kill them. They keep out other bad bugs and spiders.
Cat face spider. There are the coolest spiders ever. Non aggressive. Not poisonous.
